CTA / Rural Radio Packs
Rural Radio Resource Packs on a variety of topics related to agriculture and rural development
Web2.0 for Development Conference
07 06 2008 Web2ForDev 2007 was the first conference devoted to exploring the ways in which international development stakeholders can take advantage of the technical and organizational opportunities provided by Web 2.0 methods, approaches and applications. The conference was a CTA initiative co-organised with FAO, IICD, GTZ, Euphoric and many other organizations.
Animal Health
04 04 2008 It is widely recognised that rearing healthy livestock offers many poor families a way out of their poverty. Healthy livestock not only provide food and income but also labour for farming and transport, and manure as a source of fertilizer and fuel. The real secret to keeping healthy livestock is not allowing animals to become sick in the first place; prevention is much better than cure, not least because once one animal becomes sick or dies, there is a strong risk that the illness will spread to other animals in the herd or flock. Keeping healthy livestock requires considerable investment of money, time and other resources. However, the income and other benefits that can be gained from healthy animals ought to make this investment worthwhile. The interviews in this pack focus on general steps that farmers should take to keep their animals healthy, as well as advice for controlling particular diseases that threaten livestock health in Africa.
Goat Rearing
04 04 2008 The importance of goats in Africa has for many years been underestimated and ignored. Recently, however, there is increasing recognition that goats can provide a pathway out of poverty. Goats are relatively cheap to buy and can be kept on marginal land. They are efficient users of water and have a fast reproductive rate, allowing farmers to quickly build up a herd and get return on their investment. This pack features goat experts from across Africa, who offer advice on a range of practical subjects, including: feeding goats, breeding, goat health, rearing dairy goats and selling goat hides..
