Dutch government says Israeli force not excessive
09 01 2009 The Dutch government says it has the impression that Israel is respecting international humanitarian law in its military action in the Gaza Strip. Speaking in parliament today, Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said the cabinet does not agree that both Israel and Hamas are using excessive force, as claimed by Labour Party MPs.

Mr Verhagen said he had been shocked by the Israeli strike on a school in Gaza. He expressed support for the UN in calling for an investigation. He described the Israeli attack on a UN aid convoy in Gaza as tragic. The cabinet has asked Israel for an explanation.

Mr Verhagen went on to say that Hamas rocket attacks could be regarded unequivocally as war crimes. All parties in the lower house agreed that a ceasefire was urgently needed.
EU gas monitors start work in Ukraine
09 01 2009 European Union monitors have begun a mission in Ukraine to ensure the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe. According to the Russian energy giant Gazprom, Kiev has also agreed to allow the presence of Russian monitors at pumping stations. All conditions for the resumption of gas supplies therefore appear to be in place.

President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso says it is too early for celebrations. He points out that due to technical problems it may well be some time before the gas supply to Eastern and Central European countries actually resumes. Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, is in Kiev today and will visit Moscow on Sunday for further talks on the dispute.

Russia cut off gas for Ukraine's domestic consumption on 1 January in a row over pricing and outstanding debts. There were soon reports that Ukraine had begun tapping gas destined for Europe. Russia therefore shut down gas supplies entirely, creating particular problems in Eastern and Central Europe.
Protests held for and against Israeli attack
09 01 2009 In Rotterdam, a demonstration against the Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip was held outside the town hall, attracting more than 200 protestors. Some of them held Friday prayers in a main city centre shopping street.

About 300 people have held a rally outside the parliament building in The Hague, to demonstrate solidarity with Israel. The demonstration was initiated by a number of organisations, including the Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel and Christians for Israel.
They delivered a petition calling on MPs to stand up for Israel's right to defend its citizens.

Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen is today in parliament, facing questions from MPs about the situation in Gaza. Central will be his proposal for a European Union peace mission to monitor the border separating the Gaza Strip from Egypt.
