UK's Secretary of State for International Development, Douglas Alexander, MP, will visit Ethiopia this week, UK's Department for International Development (DfID) announced.

DfID said in a statement that it will be the first visit by a UK Cabinet Minister in the last three years.

"During his visit, Mr Alexander will see first hand the impact of, and response to, the humanitarian situation, as well as the practical impact of the UK's contribution to development in Ethiopia," it said.

The Secretary of State will meet Prime Minister Meles to discuss domestic, regional and international issues of mutual interests, the statement added.

DfID said UK is concerned about the humanitarian situation and has responded to assist Ethiopia to cope during this period.

The statement added that, in addition to Ethiopia, the official is expected to urge other countries to increase their contribution to the on going humanitarian situation.

According to DfID, UK is committed to supporting both the immediate humanitarian effort and the longer-term measures to rebuild and adapt livelihoods to fight against the impact of future disasters.

Douglas Alexander MP was appointed as Secretary of State for International Development (Cabinet level minister) in June 2007.
