HARARE, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Former South African president and SADC chief negotiator Thabo Mbeki is coming to Harare tomorrow to try and resolve the power-sharing impasse between President Robert Mugabe and the two Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) formation leaders, The Sunday Mail reported.
Speaking to CAJ News, Mbeki's spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said his boss was heading to Zimbabwe where he seeks to bring the country's negotiating parties together with the hope of unlocking the deadlock.
"Yes, there is a deadlock in Zimbabwe, but Mbeki is flying to Harare on Monday to make sure there is a solution to the power-sharing deal," said Ratshitanga.
Ratshitanga refused to shed more light arguing that Mbeki's task was not all that difficult, insisting the former South African president has been in contact with the three Zimbabwean political leaders in question, that is President Mugabe, Tsvangirai and Professor Mutambara respectively.
President Mugabe, Tsvangirai and Mutambara met on Friday to try and unlock the impasse, but referred the matter for further facilitation by Mbeki after another deadlock. The deadlock is attributed to disagreements over key ministries of finance and home affairs.
Reacting to the publication of the ministries allocated to each of the three parties yesterday, some political observers said that the MDC-T should not cry foul over President Mugabe's allocation of ministries as each of the three political parties got one of the ministries that since independence have been allocated the biggest chunk of the taxpayer's money in the national budget.
Political observers argue that the MDC-T should not complain over the allocation of the ministries as the party has not been playing its part in ensuring that the agreement that was signed between the three political parties work.
They explained further that what matters in the all-inclusive government is not personalities or ministries but the policies that the new government will collectively implement to address the challenges being faced by the country.
Since independence in 1980, the Ministries of Defence, Health and Education have received the biggest share from the budget and under the ministries that were gazetted by President Mugabe, the Ministry of Defence will be under Zanu-PF while the Ministries of Health and Education will be under the MDC-T and MDC respectively.
