100 migrants feared drowned off Yemen: UNHCR

The UN's refugee agency and Yemeni officials say that about 100 people are feared drowned after smugglers forced them overboard in the Gulf of Aden. A spokesman for the UNHCR told reporters that the smugglers' boat had left Somalia on Monday with 150 people on board. The UN agency said as the vessel neared the coast of Yemen, the smugglers forced the migrants overboard and that only 47 people managed to swim about 5 kilometers to the shore. Migrants from the Horn of Africa, particulary from war-torn Somalia, regularly face abuse at the hands of smugglers. Some 32,000 people have arrived in Yemen this year after being smuggled across the Gulf of Aden from war-torn Somalia.
