PORT-AU-PRINCE -- A group of taxi drivers in Haiti are demanding that the government pay for the funeral of a colleague and support his two young children after he was killed by police.

Taxi spokesman Jocelin Pierre denies allegations that the driver opened fire on a policeman before he was killed. He says 29-year-old Andre Jean Noel had worked in construction and saved enough money to buy his motorcycle taxi two months ago.

About a dozen drivers voiced their demand Tuesday over the radio.

Police spokesman Garry Desrosiers declined to identify the officer involved but says he is being detained while authorities investigate the killing. No charges have been filed.

Desrosiers said police pursued Noel after he fled from a roadblock last Tuesday.
