Millicom to Focus on 3G in Latin America
October 6, 2008

Millicom's chief executive, Marc Beuls, said in a conference call that the operator's priority for Latin America is to boost its mobile phone business in Colombia and its 3G mobile internet services across all of its markets, Business News Americas reports. Millicom has said it plans to offer ubiquitous internet access through an open platform combining internet access with 3G, IP and cable networks. With regards to its recent acquisition of Amnet for US$510 million on 1 October 2008, the operator said it is not planning to make more acquisitions in the region in the near future.

Significance:
Millicom's intention to launch 3G was emphasised in its recent acquisition of Amnet Telecommunications, which has given the operator access to the fixed internet, pay-TV and corporate data segment in a number of Central and South American markets. Millicom currently offers commercial 3G services in Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, El Salvador and Colombia.
