Ghana: Journalists Advised to Employ the Use of ICT

An Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Expert has advised Journalists to employ the use of ICT in order to enhance their work. The expert stresses that the use of ICT would not make journalists perfect in their work but would help improve their output.
Mr. Kwami Ahiabenu II, a board member of the Ghana Information Network for Knowledge Sharing (GINKS), gave the advice at a forum organized by the Ghana Information Network to educate journalists on the use of ICT and how this could help in the coverage of the December elections.
He asked the media to be circumspect about their reportage in order not to create tension. He observed that elections disputes have to do more with activities that transpire before the elections rather than after the elections.
He added that the Electoral Commission's role in the elections could be complemented by journalists through timely delivery of certified election results.
Mr. Ibrahim Inusah, GINKS Coordinator, said GINKS is a Non Governmental Organization with the objective of promoting knowledge sharing through internet or interaction through face to face communication.
He said GINKS takes interest in agricultural, education, health and gender issues.
He said Africa, like all developing regions in the world, stands on the doorstep of global information revolution that presents a lot of opportunities.

He added that over the past years, there have been attempts by governments, both present and past to improve Ghana's information highway because of the realization of the use of ICT as a tool for sustainable development which is significant. This has led to some improvements in ICT infrastructure though there is still room for improvements. He added that the private sector has also been very instrumental in the development of ICT in the country by building some infrastructure.
