Research into the carbon footprint of South African fruit and wine exports could challenge the idea that exported products from the developing world have a bigger environmental cost. The scheme, joint funded by DFID and the South African wine and fruit industry, will enable the food industry and its consumers to understand more about the effect of goods we buy on climate change. This study, launched by Trade and Development Minister Gareth Thomas will look at the whole cycle of production, not just transport issues and ‘food miles’.
