EPA temporarily waives fuel standards

As supply lines disrupted by hurricanes, waivers allow sale of conventional gasoline

The US Environmental Protection Agency is allowing the sale of conventional gasoline (instead of requiring reformulated gasoline to be sold) in parts of many states that were affected by hurricanes Gustave and Ike, including Texas, Kentucky, Maryland, and Virginia. The temporary waivers permit more flexibility in the fuel distribution system, and ensure an adequate fuel supply in affected areas, even in extreme circumstances that could result in shortages.
