Scotland ROCs boost wave and tidal power

The Scottish Government is likely to increase funding for wave and tidal energy technology following proposed changes to the Renewables Obligation (Scotland) published today.

Under the new system wave devices that have not received government funding will receive five Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) for every megawatt of power produced. Tidal devices will be awarded three ROCs. Other sources of renewable power will continue to receive one ROC per megawatt.

Under the terms of the Renewables Obligation (Scotland) 9% - rising to 15% by 2015 - of the energy electricity companies supply must come from renewable sources. Firms are awarded ROCs for every megawatt produced renewably and must buy permits, currently priced at £47, from other electricity producers if they miss the targets.
