Monrovia

A two-day career development workshop for over 100 female students from the 15 political sub-divisions of Liberia has ended in Monrovia.

The workshop was organized by the Forum for African Women Educationalists FAWE/Liberia and sponsored by the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).

The workshop brought together beneficiaries of the FAWE/LET scholarship program across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony marking the end of the workshop, the Minister of Gender and Development, Vabah Gayflor cautioned the students to make the sacrifices in order to obtain professional skills through which they can significantly contribute to the socio-economic and political reconstruction of Liberia.

The Director of the Children Protection and Development Division at the Ministry of Gender and Development, Mr. Robert Taylor said students will not achieve any meaningful career as long as they are deeply involved in pleasure.

Mr. Taylor admonished the female students not to allow themselves to be exploited by men.

In remarks, the Chairperson of the National Executive Committee of FAWE/Liberia, Dr. Everlyn Kandakai, thanked the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for sponsoring the workshop.

She disclosed that the Liberia Education Trust, which was established by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, has begun the construction of 50 schools and awarded 5,000 scholarships to female students in several parts of the country, adding, "LET is again training over 500 teachers for these schools."

She explained that FAWE is geared toward bridging the education gap between boys and girls as well as improving the lives of girls and women in the country.
