All Namibians carry a responsibility in ensuring a healthy and HIV-free lifestyle by using condoms in all sexual encounters.

This warning came from the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Richard Kamwi, in a speech read on his behalf as the keynote speaker at Condom Awareness Day that was held on Friday in the Vyfrand informal settlement outside Okahandja.

The theme of the event that was celebrated countrywide was, "Correct and consistent use of condoms in all relationships".

"This year's theme reminds us that we should take responsibility for our sexual health and behaviour and to prevent acquiring or spreading STDs, including HIV. The correct and consistent use of condoms in all relationships has been demonstrated as an effective tool in the fight against sexually transmitted diseases including HIV and unplanned pregnancies," said the Permanent Secretary, Kahijoro Kahuure, on behalf of his minister.

In his view it is important that all communities in the country be continuously educated on the use of condoms.

"My ministry will continue to ensure adequate supply and availability of freely distributed condoms. Hence the fact that I consider this day as the cornerstone of the public health campaign currently underway to educate the nation on the prevention and treatment of STDs and the link between untreated STDs and HIV/AIDS," he said.
