Environment

Where's Al Gore When We Need Him?

By Brent Budowsky, Consortium News. Posted August 14, 2008.

McCain is an environmental sellout. So why isn't Gore challenging him visibly, aggressively and clearly?

Anyone can champion the Earth when it's easy, yet too many remain silent when it's hard.

The forces behind oil are taking charge in the great energy debate -- and the issue of global warming has virtually disappeared from the political campaign, with barely a word from its strongest advocate.

I have supported Al Gore for a generation but am profoundly troubled by his silence and absence from the great debate during this election year.

Gore did not run for President; Gore did not endorse when it mattered; Gore did not push his issues during the primaries; Gore did not challenge the phony gas tax holiday idea; Gore does not challenge the Mother Earth of all flip-flops and sellouts from John McCain, who went from pretending to be a global warming leader to being the great shill for oil company profits.

John McCain is a second-tier Teddy Roosevelt impersonator with zero in common with TR's championing of the environment, trust-busting attacks on corporate abuses, regulation to prevent children from being poisoned by bad food, and the rights of American workers.

Why is Gore not challenging John McCain visibly, aggressively and clearly?

Why is Gore not challenging the American people to take the hard actions that are needed to conserve energy, to save the planet, and to change the world at such a critical moment?

Even Arnold Schwarzenegger has shown real guts in criticizing McCain and praising Obama. If a Republican like Arnold can be so forceful, where's Al Gore?

Why is a right-wing Republican oilman who financed the Swift Boat attacks on John Kerry doing much more this election year than the Nobel Laureate?

The occasional emergence for the big speech is not enough. The occasional crowd-pleaser for bloggers means nothing in the real fight.

The awards, the prizes, the movies, the books, the concerts, the standing ovations and venture capital funds (all of which I have supported for Gore) mean nothing, zero, nada, in the real fight at the critical moment.

Oil is defeating the Earth; oil money is now dominating the debate; oil lobbyists are now controlling the agenda. The debate is now about who supports how much drilling.

The defense of the planet has receded when the politics has become hard.

The debate is largely surrendered when the battle matters the most and the leader of the free world is being chosen.

Whatever one believes about drilling, those who try to persuade a hurting public that it matters anytime soon are committing a fraud, a hoax, a sham, a lie to the public.

Now is that time for all good men and women to come to aid of the country, the people, the planet, and the truth.

Hard truths need to be told and a great battle needs to be waged. For me that means a challenge to my friends, such as Gore, as much as a challenge to the frauds, such as McCain.

Oil is defeating the Earth, and Al Gore should roll up his sleeves and wage the fight that this crucial moment demands.

Digg!

1-When is the last time you saw a PAID advertisement on TV from any environmental or sustainable energy group? (Never)
2-When is the last time you saw a PAID advertisement on TV from an oil or coal company? (Today or yesterday)

The media companies are in the business of selling advertising- nothing more and nothing less and they know who signs the checks. They control the debate on every broadcast and cable distributed news or public affairs program. To some extent it even reaches public broadcasting through underwriting, thus the moniker National Petroleum Radio.

Energy is the biggest business in the world and the most profitable. Unless you are an organic farmer using horse driven plows you are dependent upon big oil and it's extended family of petrochemical companies for your business. Big media is not going to bite the hand that feeds them and Joe/Jane Sixpack are too stupid and/or lazy to figure it out on their own.

We live in a highly parochial and increasingly illiterate society of celebutards- people who know the names of celebrity offspring and who's doing who in Hollywood, but cannot tell you who represents them in the Congress. When a million books is considered a big deal in a country of 300 million you live in an effectively illiterate society.

Most people do not read The Nation, Huffington Post, Daily Koz, listen to Air America or watch/listen to Amy Goodman. The same people do not know who Greg Palast is, subscribe to any number of offbeat/crackpot faiths, are more uncomfortable with race than they are willing to admit in public, distrust most anyone unlike them and couldn't do 10th Grade HS Math to save their soul.

These people have their heads down, trying to keep up with the neighbors even as they fall farther and farther behind- all the while lapping up the foundation myths of America and the NeoCon talking Points. They are sheeple and aren't interested until it hits them right between the eyes- a point proven by high SUV sales right up until the bitter end. Only when they couldn't afford to drive to work did they give up the old urban assault vehicle.

Al Gore isn't going to save them- they had the chance to vote for him in 2000 and most went with the Faux Good Ol Boy from Texas. If they had even bothered to pay attention they would have known better. Gore knows this and is out of elective politics and I can't say that I blame him. The knuckle draggers will never learn.

Universal Versailles?

I've come to the sad conclusion that the age of "classic democracy" that we've known for the last couple of centuries is over, full stop.

We've entered another era; the era of controlled, managed, or channeled democracy" which is, I suppose, a contradiction in terms. Of course there are those that would argue that representative democracy has always been about channeling and controling the potential "excesses" of democracy, after all one wouldn't want things to get out of hand! What might happen if the great majority of the many attained real political power and decided to redistribute economic power and wealth to themselves and away from the few who actually have it? That of course was the fear and dilema that faced the ruling elite. How to give the impression of democratic, majority rule, whilst at the same time maintaining minority control of the fundamental structures of society which were anything but egalitarian and democratic.

But this is a digression, sorry. What I'm trying to say here is that Al Gore, for all his qualities, is still a representative of the American ruling elite, a veritable aristocracy in all but name. Gore represents the "liberal" or "radical" wing of the class that owns and controls the country. His wing favours "reform" and "change", at least on the surface, and is perferable to the agressive and rightist "fundamentalists" represented by the Bush clan, but one shouldn't confuse Gore's "radicalism" with support for any kind of alternative economic or social programme. Gore only wants to make the current system perfom better and less destrutively. To even define him as a "refromist" is probably stretching things too far.

Fundamentally we are, in our "new" form of democracy, allowed to choose between rival "conservative" candidates and strategies. There is no "opositon", not really, we're talking about somehting close to one party state here, with two "factions" who have shared power for over two centuries without any serious challange, that's quite a feat!

Probably on the 100 foot yacht he just bought. Don't worry, he says it has a 50% smaller carbon foot print than other yachts it's size.
Go ahead and get pissed because I threw that out there but does anyone know how much fuel a boat that big uses? I know someone that had a 32 footer that used 20 gallons an hour. Between this and his mansion that uses as much electricity as 200 "average" homes he is hurting his own cause. The whole "do as I say..." cliche.

"Sheeple"
Posted by: chorton on Aug 14, 2008 5:39 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
"Sheeple". A term that expresses our anger at all the people who don't listen to us and who let themselves be manipulated by the Republicans and right-wing Democrats. A term that represents our own failure of analysis, one that expresses a facile reactionary view of the American people, disguised as radical critique. (Yes, I've used it too, it's tempting to express our frustrations this way, and the term is "out there" in the ongoing conversation on the Web.) But what is the reality we are labeling with this term?

The people are being led like sheep. Are they like sheep? Do they have critical thoughts, ideas, a latent will to do something? Are they responsible for the sad state of American democracy? The people I meet at truck stops, convenience stores and campgrounds as I travel around are without exception skeptical and concerned. Few belong to unions but most wish they could. Some support Bush's policies but all are skeptical of his motives. Some spout hate-radio slogans and libertarian fantasies and some sound like Wobblies. Some are involved in politics, many are detached. (“Apathetic” is the wrong word. What is a good word for "detached, bitter and actively refusing to get involved"?) But they are terribly misinformed. Most have a sense of being misinformed and mistrust the media, but still, as is our nature, they take pride in what they think they know and understand. The most confused are often the readers of the New York Times and listeners to NPR and the BBC - I was one of these - who think they are getting the news denied to the others, and can't imagine that all those reasonable, responsible, intelligent and educated journalists are participants in a coordinated propaganda operation that is denying them access to essential news stories on almost a daily basis.

So what do we mean when we call the people "sheeple"? Are we blaming them for Bush and Pelosi, for Enron and Haliburton, for CitiCorp and Karl Rove? Are we blaming them for tuning out the news broadcasts that they rightly perceive as dishonest, and the incoherent stories and lists of facts that passes for "history" in the public school curriculum?

Should we not rather be looking at how we can meet their urgent need for good information and honest news, information and news that will support their urge to combine and act for the common good?

Let's excise this slur, sheeple, this symbolization of the blaming of the victims (including ourselves) for their/our oppression, exploitation and manipulation - from our vocabularies, and let's start calling out anyone who uses it! Because the people are treated like sheep does not make them so!

What they really need is to curb their ad-driven appetites for more of everything. What do you do with an obese global pig? You stop feeding it. If the international banks would stop loaning money to Washington to operate its wars, it would stop, and the American people would have to face the fact that they are no longer a superpower. But Al Gore will never say anything like that, because he is still part of the good old boy network and his job is to deceive the American people, yesterday, today and forever.

I say turn the World upside down and give women the right to decide if and when to birth children. Then the population would decline and ravenous macho warriors would have to return to living in balance with the Earth's ability to support their families, not their insatiable dick head egos.

I know it is convenient to portray environmentalists as mainly nice guys in Birkenstocks and torn jeans. But today's environmentalist is very, very far from that stereotype. The environmental movement has morphed into a multi-billion dollar global industry. And times are VERY good. Most environmentalists are just to plum darn tuckered out from all the money-making to be able to do the other stuff.

A typical life for an environmentalist these days is like this: attend up to 10 or more global conferences, spend some months offering high-paid consulting to government or the private sector, get some speaking fees from ivy league university, maybe write a book, visit some venture capitalists to get more money for your start-up, check your dividends from various clean-tech investments, and then meet some hottie for a little island kayacking in BC to round the year off. These guys are very happy and getting richer by the day. Why waste your life yelling at some wrinkly?

When you ask where is Al Gore, he isn't the only one who is notable by his absence. Why is this? Seems I've seen more prominent Republicans endorsing Obama than Democrats. Why? Schwarzennager endorsed Obama. So, why isn't Gore, Kerry, Carter, etc. speaking up? As for the Clintons, they say support Obama but have done and continue to do everything they can to undermind him. Begin to wonder if they haven't donated their $4,600 to the McCain campaign ... no, not wondering at all. Then again, both of them made it clear that neither of them want to see a N---- in the Oval Office except sweeping and dusting.

Gore is not in this political presidential campaign. He has staked out global warming as his issue. It does not work for one who will have to work with the upcoming administration on global warming to champion a particular candidate in the elections process. Candidates will say anything while campaigning to get elected and then turn around and do the opposite to get votes (as we have seen with Obama). I think that Gore is smart not to endorse. The real work on global warming will be done after the elections circus.

As if McCain's assault on the environment wasn't enough, Now, under cover of the Olympics & the Georgia, Russia situation The Bush administration set it's sights on the "Endangered Species Act" this week. Using the same language as Reagan did when he announced the " Relaxation of the Anti Trust laws" almost thirty years ago ( look what that got us. ). The short timer in the white house announced his " Relaxation of the Endangered Species Act" Monday.
I guess "conservation" isn't part of "conservative".

He spent all his time as VP lobbying for Monsanto's causes (including GM crops) and helping Clinton sell off national forests. Gore isn't around because he thinks the Obama dictatorship is a sure thing. Under this little bought off creep the "false man caused global warming fraud" will finally get it's teeth into YOUR wallets fools. Yes the earth will be saved by ordinary citizens paying even more taxes to big banks and billionaires while the corporations who profited off of polluting our environment actually come out ahead. CO2 which is a life line is being portrayed as a poison and the debate on that has been muted by the corporate media and Al Gore who is and integral part of that criminal element has been told to shut up so that new evidence won't be brought up. If anyone goes outside of the UN they quickly realize most scientists claim the CO2 argument is a hoax. Take the moron Hansan and his manipulated data out then the picture becomes very clear. It's clear that the earth is actually cooling since 1998 and this summer should be a wake up call to all those who mistakenly drank the Kool-Aide and now believe a drop in temperature fits warming models. It's insane to be so conditioned to propaganda that evidence people are experiencing can be discarded. If Al Gore's childhood classmate were here to talk to you he's say "Isn't it getting COLDER! Of course it is because sun spot activity has stopped almost entirely. Now global warming advocates sound like George Bush 5 years ago. They say Global Climate Change and rarely global warming. What could be more hypocritical?

We need a new environmental movement. We need to have something more grass roots then the current "institutionalized" one--one where the Sierra Club spends more money on staff salaries and lobbying rather then nature outreach programs.

And we need something that will not tell us "you need to go back to a 19th-century lifestyle of candlelight and mule power".

And we need an environmental movement that not been hijacked by Lexus-libs who have made Mother Earth their new religion and that mankind is the snake in the Garden.

And we need a movement with credibility. Not one with Al Gore's $30,000 electric bill and John Travolta flying his personal jets, while telling all the rest of us that we have to cut back.

when people state that "going green" (to use as a collective term) will cost us money. Do you think using oil is cheap? Cheap oil was never cheap, not when you factor in the environmental destruction and health issues caused by using fossil fuels. How can turning our economy into a self-sufficient, non-polluting, sustainable economy cost us more? By investing in sustainable technologies we create jobs, create industry and halt the hemoraging of our tax dollars to pay for wars to gain some other country's oil fields. It has been proven over and over that closing the loop in business, i.e., harvesting your waste stream, will SAVE businesses money. And some big corporations are just starting to get it. Google big box stores and solar power to prove my point.

He is obviously the best choice for president that has come along in 40years.Obama and McCain are media spectacles . Gore caved in to the republicans in 2000 when he knew he was the winner. Why? I could never vote for him because of that no matter what.I have lived through many elections, but this one could be the death knell for our system of democracy if either big party wins.We are still so fortunate that Ralph is making another bid. I think that there is time and a chance to beat the upcoming theocracy

Alvin Gore, of dramatic cinema fame, won't take McCain on because it might force him address the reasons he claims the fiction he presents is true.

No doubt, we have a problem with global warming, and no doubt that human industry has played a role. He didn't have to go brazenly making things up to get that point across, and now he's either going to have to keep his head down and his lips sealed on the subject, or he's going to have to answer some hard questions about why he chose to lie (or perhaps he was just fooled?) instead of present the available evidence.

Certainly, if your goal is to sell movie tickets, you shrug your shoulders and roll with whatever makes a good story. That doesn't work so well when you want to claim to be an "authority" on a topic.

So, there you have it--in order for Gore to sit on his exalted throne of lies, he can't discuss them further.

Gore likes the limelight. But after his household environmental mess was exposed he backed down a little. It made him look foolish to use old tires for set decoration and call it environmentally responsible.
I belong to Protect the Earth,we're an environmental group from Wisconsin. We held a Protect the Earth Journey,a walk from Lake Superior to Madison. We found hope amongst the people and hatred from the industrialists and my wife and I were used as a target for a hit and run accident by Tommy Thompson supporters. The most anti-environmental governor this State has ever had. We survived,so did our rather crunched car.We also led the march on the State Capitol. Where was Gore?Trying to censor your music. I loved his slide show,I'm glad he's bringing awareness to the environment, but he won't take on McCain, there's no glory in it. But he may have more luck fighting for the environment on the outside. Me, however would like to see an environmentally conscious attorney group file class action lawsuits against Corporate America and it's government cronies, They are not above that kind of lawsuit.

...corporate whore just like the rest of them. Just not as big as McInsane, Hellary, and Obama.

Maybe he is to busy on his "low carbon footprint" 100 foot new yacht he bought with the Peace Prize windfall.

In any event, the man has no backbone (rolled over in the election of 2000), did little to nothing about the environment while VP, and watched as the electric car(EV1) was killed in 2003. The process started around 1998.

The man is and was a fraud.

I'm voting third party this year.

Given the ADD nature of the American consciousness, I'd say it's too early for Gore to weigh in on McCain's abysmal flipflopping position(s) on the environment. When the race is official, Gore could have a real impact on public opinion, and it might remain in the low-information voter's mind long enough for him/her to not vote McCain. If an opinion is formed too far in advance of election day, the ignorant, uninformed masses will forget they had damned good reasons not to vote for McCain and will succumb to more recent sure-to-be-produced-lying ads telling them that McCain is going to protect them from all those amorphous things they fear.

There should be 300 million people standing ready to pull the trigger. It looks to me like he has done more than all of the rest of us combined. It is our turn. If things don't turn around its not Al Gore's fault. He did his part.

Wasn't Gore Vice President under Clinton? Wasn't he part of the rise of the WTO and NAFTA? Where was his environmental work then? Eight years as V.P. should have produced monumental environmental change during his administration, but it didn't. What's his answer now... tax you and me with a carbon tax. He's also starting a carbon trading fund trading carbon credits or basically trading the right to pollute. Where is Al Gore when we need him? Right where he's always been. In the same pocket as the rest of these Elites. The pocket of the global banking cartel. There's now alot of money to be made on pollution. Let's not be fooled again.

Why isn't Gore speaking out now when it would matter? He doesn't have a new book or movie out to sell?
