The proliferation of bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) and
preferential trade agreements (PTAs) may be more costly for
developing countries than previously anticipated, according
to a new study by the United Nations.
The 2007 Trade and Development Report, released on
September 5 by the UN Conference on Trade and Development
(UNCTAD), claims that ‘North-South’ trade agreements can
often limit the long-term growth of competitive industries in
developing countries.
