The EC is open to larger quota increases if member states so desire

Speaking in Italy on June 19th 2008 the Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel indicated that the if a majority of member states wanted more than the 1% annual increase in milk quotas from 2009 to 2013, then the EC ‘would be open to the idea’.

Editorial comment

The level of quota increase will have an important bearing on the beef sector. If quotas are increased faster than the rate of increase in milk yields then this could serve to halt the current decline in the size of the EU dairy herd and hence increase domestic EU beef production. The level of quota increase will also have an important bearing on the level of EU exports of value-added dairy products.
